TIPS FOR TRANSITIONING TO NATURAL HAIR

Transitioning in this context simply means changing the features of your hair by moving from chemical-based hair (Relaxed hair) to natural hair. Transitioning into natural hair requires a major decision which is either cutting off all of your processed hair (Big Chop) or simply allowing the natural hair to grow underneath the processed hair, within a short while the processed hair will start breaking off and then you can consider trimming them in bits, leaving the natural hair to blossom. Below are some tips you will find helpful in your natural hair quest.

FIGURE OUT YOUR HAIR TYPE

At the early stage of transition, I will advise you to find out what your hair type is and this is because there are different kinds of natural curls out there, and knowing the category you belong will help you in making the right choices for your hair. There is the 4b/4c, 4b/4a, 4a, 3c and 3a/3b types, all of these types are majorly found in black people.

FIND OUT YOUR HAIR  POROSITY

Hair porosity is simply the ability of your hair to absorb moisture and it is broken down into three categories: Low porosity, Normal porosity, and High porosity.

Low porosity: It is challenging for your hair to absorb moisture, but easy to retain once it gets in.
Normal Porosity: moisture is easily absorbed and retained.
High Porosity: Moisture easily goes in and in the same vein easily comes out.
Knowing your hair porosity is important in choosing the right products for your hair.

YOU MUST BE PATIENT

Having readiness and tolerance for this journey is highly important and this is so because you need time to achieve your desired hair goals. Remember, your hair can't grow overnight so BEING PATIENT is necessary.

FIND A GO-TO STYLE

You must have your mind set hairstyles to wear while your natural hair is in its tender and vulnerable stage. You could try braid outs, wigs or sewing, protective styles such as cornrow,
buns and twist-out will also add value to your hair.

ALWAYS DETANGLE

When transitioning, it is important to detangle every day, this process assists the relaxed hair in falling off leaving the natural hair. It is very necessary to change your detangling routine once your hair is fully transitioned.

ALWAYS CLEAN AND MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR

Washing and moisturizing your hair is not negotiable, Your wash routine should be once or twice weekly. These activities aid the fast growth of your hair.

TRIM  WHEN NECESSARY

Trimming your hair weekly or monthly is unnecessary, trimming the ends of your hair should depend on if you notice any kind of weakness on the hair.

AVOID HEAT

The heat from hair-dryers or straighteners should be avoided to the barest minimum, so as to avoid any kind of hair damage associated with heat.

MASSAGE YOUR HAIR

I am of the opinion that this should be done randomly every day. Massaging your hair promotes blood circulation, which is helpful for your hair growth

BE GENTLE WITH YOUR HAIR

At this stage, your hair is very fragile so it is necessary to treat your hair with care, especially when detangling, washing, or drying.

DEVELOP A REGIMENT

It is important to have a fixed "hair day" where your hair will be washed, treated, and styled. Do yourself well by being constant with this routine.

PROTECT YOUR HAIR AT NIGHT

Always use a sleep bonnet or scarf before going to bed, preferably a silk sleep cap because it helps to provide you with healthier hair, and keeps your hair hydrated throughout the night.
