PROTECTIVE STYLING (How to gain hair length)

HOW TO CARE FOR NATURAL BLACK HAIR, MAINTAINING YOUR NATURAL HAIR., Washing and setting

Protective styling are hairstyles that help give your hair a break from constant manipulation and it features consists of hiding the ends of the hair from damaging agents such as heat from dryers, flat combs, straighteners, and the sun, it gives the scalp a room to rest and helps to maintain hair length.

Harmattan and Winter are the seasons when protective styling becomes very important and this is because of the rapid evaporation of fluid that comes with the season causing dryness which reduces the moisture in the hair making them vulnerable and weak, further causing them to break. These seasons require an immediate change of hair care routine else, It dries out the moisture at the ends of the hair, reduces moisture at the root of the hair, weakens the ends of the hair and breaks the ends of the hair leaving you with reduced hair length.

It is very easy to protect your hair when the need arises and it all depends on the route you desire to take, you can protective style simply with your natural hair or hiding them under extensions or scarfs.
Below I will be sharing with you protective styling ideas.

Cornrows

Cornrows

This is a common and easy to do protective styling method, all you need is to lay flat the hair in twist or braids hiding the edge from agents that are capable of destroying them. It could be done individually or you can pay someone to hook you up.

Bantu Knots

This is a great alternative and an easy way to protect the ends of your hair. It is done in such a way that the ends of the hair are hidden from agents capable of destroying them.

Braids

Braids
This helps in hiding your hair under extensions throughout the period needed, leaving a very little percentage of your hair out, majorly the scarp area.

Weaves and Wigs

Weaves and Wigs
Wearing weaves and wigs are great for hiding the entire hair from heat as a result of constant use of the dryers, flat combs, curling irons and straighteners, exposure to the sun, constant detangling, washing and treatment. It is important to state that the advantage of wigs and weave could turn to a disadvantage easily if not properly cared for. Some people carry weaves for months all in the name of "protective styling" When they finally decide to remove them dandruff or lice are already the new tenants.  My point is, change your weaves and wigs when necessary.

Buns

Parking your hair upward and hiding your ends inward or fixing a weave on it, is great for protecting your hair.

Scarfs

Scarfs can be used in protecting your hair from dangerous agents, It is a great alternative for those lazy days when you don't feel like doing too much.
